How to build a maritime CV that truly stands out
A seafarer’s résumé is no ordinary document: it is the introduction to your professional career at sea. A good CV communicates your experience, your certifications and your reliability in seconds. Here is how to structure it so it captures the recruiter’s attention.
Details and certifications up front
Maritime recruiters look at the essentials first. Make sure the following appear clearly at the top:
- Your category or rank (for example, Deck Officer, Able Seaman, Motorman).
- Your STCW certifications and their validity.
- Your nationality, documentation and availability to embark.
Detail your experience on board
Listing the ships you have worked on is not enough. Specify the type of vessel (container ship, bulk carrier, offshore, cruise ship), the tonnage, the route and your concrete responsibilities. This information lets the recruiter know at once whether your profile fits the vacancy.
Mind the format
A tidy CV conveys discipline, a quality highly valued on board. Follow these guidelines:
- Two pages maximum, with clear sections that are easy to scan.
- One language per version; have one ready in Spanish and one in English.
- PDF format, so it looks the same on any device.
Tip: check that there are no spelling mistakes. A slip in the CV raises doubts about your attention to detail.
Once your CV is ready, upload it to your profile at Alpha Maritime Services. That way, when a company looks for talent like yours, you will be among the first candidates.
